TRETTEL DIAGNOSED WITH DOUBLES FEVER IN ‘DOGS WIN
SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Pat Trettel was the key of the game. He booked a hat trick in the doubles column and the Saltdogs got more terrific pitching as they downed the Explorers 6-2 at Lewis and Clark Park Sunday night.
Lincoln led from wire to wire, opening its account in the top of the first on a Curt Smith run-scoring single.
Trettel’s second double came in the fourth inning, scoring Rafael Alvarez to make it 2-0 Saltdogs.
The Lincoln backstop struck for a two-run double down the left field line in the sixth inning to give the ‘Dogs a 4-0 advantage.
Alex Maestri (8-6) pitched six innings, allowing two runs on four hits to earn the win. Garrett Sherrill and Santo Luis combined to work two perfect middle innings and Nick Schreiber closed out the contest with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth.
Trettel finished the evening 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBI. Every Saltdog except Kurt Steinhauer registered at least one hit in a 15-hit effort.
Gavin Dickey slugged two doubles, scored two runs and stole a base for the second consecutive night. Curt Smith went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Brandon Jones and Alvarez each had two hits.
Richard Salazar (7-6) allowed four runs on 11 hits in six innings to suffer the loss.
The teams meet for game three of the four-game series Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Jeremy Brewer (1-1) is expected to take the bump against Ty Marotz (6-5). Radio coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. on KFOR 1240.
