CAPTAINS GET RINGS, BLOWOUT SALTDOGS
SHREVEPORT, La. — The Shreveport-Bossier Captains received their 2010 American Association championship rings before the game, and celebrated further during the contest as they blowout and routed the Lincoln Saltdogs 13-2 in front of 2,089 fans at Fair Grounds Field Saturday night.
After the Saltdogs tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the third inning with a Maikel Jova RBI double and a Pat Trettel run-scoring triple, Shreveport-Bossier rallied for eight runs over the next two innings to take a commanding lead.
Ryan DiPietro (1-0) pitched five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking our four and walking zero to earn the victory. Alex Maestri allowed seven runs – six earned – in 2 2/3 innings to take the loss.
The Captains stole six bases in the first three innings off Maestri and catcher Trettel.
Blake Gailen, Curt Smith, and Vance Albitz all recorded multi-hit nights for the ‘Dogs offensively.
Phil Hawke got the night off at first base but was used on the mound in mop-up duty in the eighth inning. Hawke struck out one and walked one and did not allow a hit. The Pensacola, Fla. native has now thrown 2 2/3 scoreless innings in his career.
With the loss, Lincoln drops to 1-2 on the season. Shreveport-Bossier improves to 2-1.
The teams meet Sunday night at 6:05 p.m. for the finale of the four-game series. John James is expected to pitch for the Saltdogs against Aaron Cunningham for the Captains. Radio coverage begins on KFOR 1240 at 5:35 p.m.
