Italy proves sto be a legit contender in the Intercontinental Cup defeating (5-2) Korea by playing some superb defensive baseball and displaying timely hitting.
Italian left hander Chris Cooper had a shaky start, allowing 4 hits in the first 2 innings. But Korea could score only once and Italy was quick in getting ahead in the bottom of the first on a 2 RBI single by left fielder Chapelli off lefty Tae Soo Choo.
After the go ahead run, Korea wasted no time in making the call to the bullpen and sent to the mound their ace Seong Hyun Kim. The right hander limited Italy to a couple of hits over 5 innings and in the 7th Korea tied the game. Designated hitter Jae Hwan Kim hit a lead off double against reliever Cicatello and scored on a bunt and a sac fly.
Seong put himself in trouble in the bottom half of the inning. He walked first baseman Sambucci, allowed him to reach second and then, with pinch runner Mazzuca on second, he misplayed a sacrifice bunt by Italian second baseman Vaglio. When his throw reached the outfield, Mazzuca put Italy once again ahead.
